Some kids making their way through Indiana’s juvenile justice system are slipping through the cracks. They’re supposed to get a public defender to help with their cases, but that doesn’t always happen.

So, some of them end up in the Department of Correction when they shouldn’t. And, oftentimes, it’s for an incident an adult would never serve time in prison for.

Several attorneys are calling on the Indiana Supreme Court to overhaul the state’s public defender system. They filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to spell out rules, procedures and standards for defending those who rely on the state’s public defender system.
